1. Wheels / tires

What's wrong, in plain English: A wheel or tire can fail while driving. Due to incorrect tolerances, the rear wheel drive bearing and rear axle may wear.

What could happen: Bearing and axle wear may affect handling and control of the motorcycle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the wheel bearing, and if necessary, replace the bearing and rear axle, at no charge. The recall began on January 10, 2014. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2007 F 800 S.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized BMW dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 13V549000.
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-800-525-7417.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
