1. Trailer Hitches

What's wrong, in plain English: A vehicle part that may fail. THE PLATFORM TRAILER HITCHES ON THE SUSPECT VEHICLES MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED WITH SUFFICIENT HITCH-TO-ATTACHMENT BOLT CLAMP LOAD. IF THIS CONDITION EXISTS, THE TRAILER HITCH ATTACHING PARTS MAY LOOSEN AND BREAK.

What could happen:

The fix: DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPOSITION THE HITCH AND REAR BUMPER, RETORQUE THE ATTACHMENT BOLTS AND REPLACE THE EXISTING REAR HITCH-TO-FRAME BOLTS AT NO COST TO OWNER.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 1982 SUBURBAN.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Chevrolet dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 82V028000.
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
