1. Brakes

What's wrong, in plain English: Anything that slows the car down. Treat brake recalls as urgent. Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2021 Coachmen Spirit Travel Trailers. The Breakaway switch power lead is wired incorrectly and may lose power.

What could happen: The trailer brakes may not engage if the breakaway switch does not have power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: Dealers will rewire the breakaway switch, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 9, 2021. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-825-8205. Forest River's number for this recall is 220-1336.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2021 COACHMEN.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Forest River dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 21V350000 (manufacturer code 220-1336).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-574-825-8205.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
