1. Engine

What's wrong, in plain English: Engine problems range from stalling to fire. Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 CBR300RA, CBR300R and CB300F motorcycles. The affected motorcycles may have an improperly machined crankshaft which may result in the failure of the connecting rod bearing retainer.

What could happen: If the connecting rod bearing retainer fails, the engine may stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the crankshaft assembly, free of charge. The recall began on August 26, 2016. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870. Honda's number for this recall is KB9.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2016 CB300F.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Honda dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 16V528000 (manufacturer code KB9).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-866-784-1870.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
