1. Engine

What's wrong, in plain English: Engine problems range from stalling to fire. Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2020-2021 CRF1100 Africa Twin motorcycles equipped with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). A software error in the engine control unit (ECU), may disconnect the controller area network (CAN) communication and release the clutch, which can result in an engine stall or a loss of drive power.

What could happen: An engine stall or a loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

The fix: Dealers will update the ECU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 6, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870. Honda's number for this recall is KNB.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2020 CRF1100 AFRICA TWIN.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Honda dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 22V662000 (manufacturer code KNB).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-866-784-1870.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
