1. Steering

What's wrong, in plain English: If steering fails you can lose control of the car. The steering wheel assembly may break, possibly resulting in the steering wheel separating from the steering column while driving.

What could happen: A steering wheel separation while driving can cause a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash.

The fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will check the production lot number of the steering wheel assembly, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on March 26, 2018. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 173.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2018 SANTA FE.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Hyundai dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 18V118000 (manufacturer code 173).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-855-371-9460.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
