1. Engine

What's wrong, in plain English: Engine problems range from stalling to fire. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage.

What could happen: A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: Dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 29, 2021. Owners may contact Kia custom…

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2017 OPTIMA HYBRID.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Kia dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 21V844000 (manufacturer code SC218).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-800-333-4542.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
