1. Airbags

What's wrong, in plain English: The airbag system — the part that is supposed to protect you in a crash. Incorrect seat trim covers on one or both of the front seats can prevent the seat-mounted side air bag from deploying properly.

What could happen: Improper deployment of the seat-mounted side air bag increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

The fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front seats and replace the seat trim covers as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TB14 / 20TA14.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2020 HIGHLANDER HYBRID.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Toyota dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 20V633000 (manufacturer code 20TB14 / 20TA14).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-800-331-4331.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
