1. Airbags

What's wrong, in plain English: The airbag system — the part that is supposed to protect you in a crash. The air bag Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may have a defective power supply capacitor that can result in air bag deactivation or inadvertent deployment of the air bags.

What could happen: Deactivated air bags increases the risk of injury. Inadvertent deployment of the air bags increase the risk of a crash.

The fix: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install new software and replace the air bag ECU as necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 25, 2019. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69Z5.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2016 TIGUAN.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Volkswagen dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 19V535000 (manufacturer code 69Z5).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
