3 safety recalls, most serious first

1. Electrical system

What's wrong, in plain English: Wiring, modules, batteries. Short circuits can cause stalls or fires. The Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) microprocessor may reset and cause the high voltage system to disconnect.

What could happen: A disconnected high voltage system can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: Volvo Car will notify owners, and dealers will install a software update, free of charge. The recall began March 30, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-888-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10078.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2022 XC40 T4 FWD.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Volvo dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 21V109000 (manufacturer code R10078).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-888-458-1552.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.

2. Backup camera — software update

What's wrong, in plain English: The rear camera may not show an image when reversing. The rearview camera image may not display when the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

What could happen: A rearview camera image that does not display reduces the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: The software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 27, 2025. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10320.

After the recent software update to 5.1.17, the sound in the car ceases to work. None of the emergency sensors sound, the directional doesn’t make sound, the radio doesn’t work. You have to completely reset the entire electronics system, which then deletes certain app data and requires re-login. Volvo Support has not been helpful. Online forums report t…

I am reporting a safety-related defect involving the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system in my vehicle. The AEB system has repeatedly activated without any apparent reason, causing the vehicle to brake suddenly when there are no obstacles, vehicles, pedestrians, or road hazards present. These events have occurred under normal driving conditions. I ha…

Even after the last recall campaign, my vehicle still frequently fails to activate the backup camera with a message stating Backup Camera unavailable. The software update that was intended to resolve the issue has not worked. I've seen multiple other Volvo drivers complaining about the same issue online. This is regarding the following previous recall: Rec…

08/18/2025 · Backup camera
The backup camera doesn't always work. There are times when you will put the car in reverse and it will attempt to display the backup camera but instead says camera is temporarily unavailable. There recently was a recall for this, twice, but the issue continues to occur.

I was getting the "Rear Camera Not Available" warning, starting months ago. I received the notification of the Volvo recall R10320. I scheduled a software inspection/upgrade at the dealer. On July 8, the dealer installed the newer software that supposed to take care of it. Revision 3.6.4 was installed. It seemed okay for a week. Now the same warning messag…

My vehicle is affected by the recall #R10320 or NHTSA # 25V282. The recall letter states that the dealerships have the updated software available to solve the back-up camera issue, also over the air update will solve the problem later if that is my choice. The problem is that I see this as just a marketing ploy to get me into the dealership and upsell me on…
