High risk Campaign 19E058000 · announced 28/08/2019 (5 years ago)

1. Steering

What's wrong, in plain English: If steering fails you can lose control of the car. The steering center rods may have an insufficient ball pin pull force that may allow the rods to detach from the steering knuckle.

What could happen: If the steering rod detaches from the steerable wheel knuckle, it can cause sudden loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: ZF has notified the parts distributors, instructing them to inform the end customer. ZF will reimburse them for the affected parts. The recall began August 28, 2019.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 1999 5 SERIES.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized BMW dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 19E058000.
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
