1. Steering

What's wrong, in plain English: If steering fails you can lose control of the car. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTOR HOME CHASSIS AND HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS. THE AFFECTED VEHICLES HAVE TIE ROD ENDS AND/OR DRAG LINK ASSEMBLY ENDS THAT COULD HAVE INSUFFICIENT HARNESS IN THE BALL STUD.

What could happen: THIS COULD RESULT IN PREMATURE WEAR AND, POTENTIALLY, SEPARATION OF THE BALL STUD FROM ITS SOCKET.

The fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TIE ROD ENDS AND/OR DRAG LINK ASSEMBLIES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 27, 2000.OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 1999 HEAVY DUTY.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Ford dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 00V246111.
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-800-392-3673.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
