6 safety recalls, most serious first
1. Engine
What's wrong, in plain English: Engine problems range from stalling to fire. A hose may separate from the engine oil cooler tube assembly causing an oil leak.
What could happen: A sudden loss of engine oil may cause engine failure, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, an oil leak, in the presence of an ignition source, increases the risk of a fire.
The fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine oil cooler tube assembly, free of charge. The recall began on March 23, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S40.
What to do
- Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2017 MUSTANG.
- Book a repair at any authorized Ford dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 16V779000 (manufacturer code 16S40).
- The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
- Manufacturer hotline: 1-866-436-7332.
- Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.

What could happen: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

3. Latches / locks
What's wrong, in plain English: Doors, hood or trunk may open unexpectedly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."
