1. Seats

What's wrong, in plain English: Seat frames, adjusters or child-seat anchors. A seam on the height adjuster for the front seats may have been insufficiently welded.

What could happen: In the event of a crash, the weld seam may break and cause the seat cushion to shift forward, increasing the risk of injury.

The fix: DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the tilt adjuster for the front seats, free of charge. DVUSA issued owners an interim notification on December 19, 2019. The recall began March 9, 2020. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA's number for this recall is VS3SITZVER.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2019 SPRINTER 4500.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Freightliner dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 19V800000 (manufacturer code VS3SITZVER).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-877-762-8267.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.

2. Fuel system

What's wrong, in plain English: Fuel lines, tank or pump. Fuel problems usually mean a leak, and leaks mean fire risk. The bayonet lock between the fuel pump and the fuel tank may not have been closed and locked during manufacturing. As a result, a leak between the fuel pump and the fuel tank could occur. In addition, a gas station fuel pump may not automatically stop once the tank fill level is reached, potentially causing the fuel to overflow.

What could happen: A diesel fuel leak can create slippery road conditions, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the bayonet lock on the fuel pump, locking it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began January 3, 2020. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA's number for this recall is VS3KRAFMOD.

13. Electrical system — software update

What's wrong, in plain English: Wiring, modules, batteries. Short circuits can cause stalls or fires. The MBUX multimedia system software may cause the display to remain black, or reboot after startup. This could result in the rearview camera image not displaying properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

What could happen: A backup camera that displays a blank image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

The fix: The multimedia system software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. DVUSA issued owners an interim notification on July 23, 2021. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA's number for this recall is VS3UXPOBOX.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2019 SPRINTER 4500.
  2. This recall may be fixed by an over-the-air software update. Check the car's screen or app before booking a dealer visit.
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
