1. Airbags

What's wrong, in plain English: The airbag system — the part that is supposed to protect you in a crash. The internal acceleration sensor in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) can misinterpret vibrations such as those from poor road conditions or a flat tire to be a sensor error thereby disabling the air bags from deploying in a crash.

What could happen: Air bags that do not deploy as designed in a crash increase the risk of injury.

The fix: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the SRS-ECU software, free of charge. The recall began on November 10, 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-17-006.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2016 MIRAGE.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Mitsubishi dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 17V686000 (manufacturer code SR-17-006).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-888-648-7820.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
