1. Seats

What's wrong, in plain English: Seat frames, adjusters or child-seat anchors. A joint in the driver's seat-back frame may not be properly welded, reducing the strength of the seat-back frame.

What could happen: In the event of a rear-impact crash, the seat-back may fail, increasing the risk of injury.

The fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's seat-back, free of charge. The recall began June 28, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18178.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2018 SONIC.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Chevrolet dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 18V342000 (manufacturer code 18178).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-800-222-1020.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
