1. Fuel system

What's wrong, in plain English: Fuel lines, tank or pump. Fuel problems usually mean a leak, and leaks mean fire risk. The impeller inside the low-pressure fuel pump may crack and deform, potentially causing the fuel pump to fail.

What could happen: Fuel pump failure may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: Dealers will replace the fuel pumps, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2022. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 5321K.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2018 MAZDA6.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Mazda dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 21V875000 (manufacturer code 5321K).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-800-222-5500.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.

The car only has 70k miles on it. The engine started smoking under the hood. Immediately stopped to look. There was oil leaking but I could not see from where.
